Novacaine is a drug used for stabilizing the neuronal membranes, thus it acts best as a local anesthesia. It acts very rapidly and takes only 2-5 minutes. However, it stays for a very short period. That is on average it wares off in 1 to 1-1/2 hours.

Speaking from experience and depending on how much novacaine they have given you; it could take up to 4 hours to wear off.

It will usually wear off within six hours but a loss of feeling beyond the cut may be due to a cut nerve, not a novacaine shot.

The time taken for the novacaine to wear off would depend on the quantity of the shot and the number of shots you've had. It will vary from individual to individual so this is a question you best ask your doctor before getting stitches on your finger.

Novocain is the popular trade name of the local anaesthetic drug Procaine, which belongs to the amino ester group. It is often referred to commonly as novocaine or novacaine. Its chief use is in reducing the pain attributed to intramuscular injection of penicillin. It is also popularly used in dentistry.

It is interesting to note that before procaine came into use, the drug cocaine was the most widely used local anaesthetic. While procaine has the same advantages, it lacks the euphoric and addictive attributes of cocaine.
