If you seriously require an answer to this question, then you really need to consider your lifestyle choices. No doubt you are concerned because you know that there will be drugs in your body during birth. Did you know that smoking, drinking alcohol and taking drugs during pregnancy could have long lasting and painful effects on your baby?

Do you really want to put your child through a lifetime of difficulty and discomfort, for the sake of drugs? Surely you don’t. That’s why you should be more concerned about stopping taking drugs, than you are about whether or not your baby will be tested for drugs.

Of course, it does depend on your doctor whether or not the baby is tested. It is not standard procedure. There are no random checks, either, meaning that the only way your body will be tested for drugs is if it is suffering from a condition, or if there are suspicions about the mother being a drug user.

If you are currently struggling with a drug addiction, then you’re not alone. Millions of people suffer with drug addiction, and a large number of them get over the problem by seeking the right support. You can get help from many organizations, hospitals and rehabilitation clinics across the country. Start thinking about your family, and start thinking about your coming baby! You want the best for your child, no doubt, so get over your drug addiction today. You simply can’t put your child through such awful problems.

1. It depends on the preference of your doctor. And 2. If they have suspicions of you being a drug user. Other than that, no they do not routinely or randomly drug test babies or the mothers. I know this for a fact because I smoked marijuana with both my children and was not drug tested. And before you go calling me a selfish immature bad parent let me just say I am healthy, my children are healthy and were born healthy, and both are smart as whips with no learning or health prolems.

Usually yes. They have a few ways of testing. Sometimes they test the baby's first stool (meconium), sometimes they test the placenta, and sometimes they test the blood or amniotic fluid.
If they go the meconium route, beware because meconium goes back to when you were 19 weeks pregnant. They will test you as well. Please know that NOWHERE in the whole united states of America is drug testing newborns mandatory, and if your are uncomfortable with your baby being poked and tested not only with out your consent, but for no good reason, you need to speak up and let the nurses and staff know where you stand and what you expect. Also, keep the baby in your room, don't have him/her sleep in the nursery because they will do what test they want to and they will not ask you first.

you have no clue of the benefits of pot during pregnancy
I have three kids who are all well adjusted  adults now
I smoked pot with all of my kids because I could not eat
pot is nontoxic it has more good effects than negative
look it up then look up who paid for the studies
if it is done from a major university it says it is harmless
if it is off a government website
it says it will ruin your life
the only thing that pot could do to ruin your life is getting caught with it
and that is the police ruining your life not pot
freedom for all

Most of the time babies are only drug tested after birth if the mother is a suspected drug user when she comes in to give birth to the baby. Other than that probably not.

More likely if you are on any welfare program (medicaid), or if you are single and fall between the ages of 15-25, then yes. Its is not right, or fair, but it happens. There is not a single state in the whole united states that makes drug testing newborns mandatory by law, it is the doctor/midwife's call to make. Just remeber your 2nd amendment rights!!

Some hospitals do test the placenta (afterbirth) for drugs to know whether or not the baby is going to go threw withdrawals or not. Not every mother giving birth tells her dr. She has been abusing drugs. Not sure what hospitals do this or not?

Most of the time they only do the drug test if there is something with the baby that is when they do all the test to see what may be wrong with the baby and if that comes into to play then they would no how to treat the baby.

Usually they only test the mother tests negative but claims to have used drugs recently. They need to know these things so they can treat the baby for potentially fatal withdrawal once its born, they are not there to judge you and you won't lose you child because of your drug use. At the hospital I worked at we always had at least one person on the floor who used drugs while pregnant, its a very dangerous thing to do but its not uncommon.

Most likely your baby will be drug tested. THC stays in the system 3-10 days after only 1 time use. 30-45 days with regular use and up to 90 days with chronic use. It also stays in the placenta longer than it stays in the baby's system.

Yes, this is standard testing now. They test the mother and the baby for drugs. Some hospitals will even test the placenta or the baby's first stool.. Any drug use during pregnancy can be detected in both.

Yes they do I know some hospitals just test the mother but most test both the mother and the baby....the nurse should tell you right there that they are going to test you just because they have to test everyone now

Yes, this is standard procedure at all hospitals now. All babies are drug tested after birth so they can receive the proper care.
