How Long Does Codeine Stay In Your System For Drug Testing?

According to experts, codeine remains present in the urine for two to four days after ingestion. While in the body, the drug codeine converts to morphine as it is metabolized. Therefore, any drug test given while codeine remains in the body will produce a positive result for morphine, which is also a component in powerful street and outlawed street drugs, such as heroin. For this reason, it's very important to avoid codeine for a week or more if you're taking a scheduled drug test. If you have a valid prescription for codeine, you should let your company or drug testing firm know this by bringing the prescription along with you when you take the test. While this may not exclude you from the negative repercussions of testing positive for morphine, it will provide extra evidence that you are not abusing heroin or other drugs that register a positive morphine result. Unfortunately, most modern urine drug tests are not sensitive enough to detect exactly which drug you took (or if you took just one) when you are tested; therefore, it is impossible for testers to know whether or not you abused street drugs, as well as codeine. This can make it difficult to explain yourself if you do test positive. In the eyes of drug testers, you may have been abusing a range of drugs containing morphine.

The only tests that detect the presence of specific drugs that show as morphine are hair tests; hair is used to find the presence of recent drug use, within a three-month period. However, cutting your hair very short, or getting a "buzz cut", can be an excellent way to avoid this sort of intrusive drug testing. As far as urine tests go, it's really difficult to elude detection when you follow the rules of the test - often, these tests are tightly controlled to avoid replacement of the person's urine with someone else's "drug-free" urine. Thought these tests have been foiled through various tricks and methods, it's always a good idea to avoid codeine and all other drugs that will produce a positive result that stays on your permanent record.

I took cough syrup with codeine that was prescribed to my dad in december, we were out of the country and I had a terrible cold and couldn't sleep...my dad personally gave it to me, harmless we thought. In January I nailed an interview for a great job, I had to take a drug test and was sure that it was in the bag, since I don't do ANY type of drugs....when the results came in, I tested possitive for codeine and lost a great opportunity. FML.

95% of an initial dose of codeine is eliminated through the renal system within 48 hours. However, depending on the amount and the period of time over which the drug is ingested, traces can show up in the blood stream for many days afterward.
