No. A Five-Hour Energy shot will not cause you to fail a drug test. This is just another internet myth.

Standard drug tests look for ten substances in the blood, urine, hair or saliva. These are:

  • Amphetamines.
  • Barbiturates.
  • Benzodiazepines.
  • Cannabinoids.
  • Cocaine.
  • Methadone.
  • Methaqualone.
  • Opiates.
  • Phencyclidine.
  • Propoxyphene.
A Five-Hour Energy shot does not contain any of the above substances, nor is it chemically-similar to them.

5-hour energy drink drug test
  • The drink, Five-Hour Energy contains the vitamins B6 and B12 along with Niacin (B3) and Folic acid (B9). It gets its "energy" from the substances citicoline, tyrosine, phenylalanine, taurine, malic acid, glucuronolactone and caffeine. None of these are tested for in drug tests.
  • There has never been a single confirmed case of someone failing a drug test because they have ingested a Five-Hour Energy drink. There is also no scientific evidence to support the claim that it could make you fail a screening.
  • The company that manufactures Five-Hour Energy has claimed that, during a scientific study, the subjects who drank Five-Hour Energy significantly outperformed those subjects who were given a placebo. The experiment tested the subjects on their attention span and self-awareness.

My sister tested positive for opiates directly after drinking a 5 hour energy. Her doctor's office made her drink a whole bunch of water and wait an hour and then it tested negative. I know for a fact she hadn't taken any opiates in years as she is extremely opposed to them due to a family member's addiction problems. The doctor said that it has been known to happen a few times, but once you flush your system with water it will go away. I was there when this happened so I know it's true.

I don't see how it could. There are no narcotics in a Five-Hour Energy shot.

They test for narcotics. (illegal drugs i.e. Cocaine, opiates, speed, meth, prescription medication families.) Energy drinks may dilute your urine if you drink too much. But one of those little guys isn't going to do anything but keep you awake during the test.
