Yes, in some cases the pet store "Petco" does indeed drug test its prospective employees, especially if the position you are applying for is security- or safety-sensitive.

This may change from state to state, though, as there is no federal law regarding this issue.

It will also be up to Petco what kind of drug test they give you, although the most efficient and cost-effective test is a urine screening.

Only in rare circumstances will you be asked to undertake a hair follicule, blood or saliva test.

Petco's drug policy
The most common urine tests are either five or ten panel screenings. A ten panel screening looks for the following substances in a urine sample:

  • Amphetamines (which includes methamphetamine).
  • Barbiturates.
  • Benzodiazepines.
  • Cannabinoids (such as THC).
  • Cocaine.
  • Methadone.
  • Methaqualone.
  • Opiates (Codeine, Morphine, Heroin, Oxycodone, Vicodin).
  • Phencyclidine (PCP).
  • Propoxyphene.
It should be made clear on the application form if a drug test will need to be performed on you. If you are applying for a position for which they wish to drug test you, then abstain from any substance abuse in the weeks before.
