It really depends on where you live and what your criminal history is like. For example, if you have a history of hard drug use, you are much more likely to have a more extensive drug test.

Usually, probation officers carry out the standard ten-panel drugs test, which uses a urine sample to detect any illegal and abusive substances in your system.

What type of drug tests do probation officers give?

The ten-panel test (which is the standard urine test) looks for the following substances in the sample:

  • Amphetamines (which includes Methamphetamine).
  • Barbiturates.
  • Benzodiazepines.
  • Cannabinoids (such as THC, the active ingredient in Marijuana).
  • Cocaine.
  • Methadone.
  • Methaqualone.
  • Opiates (such as Codeine, Morphine, Heroin, Oxycodone, Vicodin).
  • Phencyclidine (usually known as PCP).
  • Propoxyphene.
So, unless you have taken any of the above substances, you should not show a negative result when you take a ten-panel drug test. However, as stated earlier, the courts have the power to give you any form of drug test they deem necessary, so you may or may not have a more extensive screening.

That's not necessarly true. I am on probation for a year, and when I started having to see my probation officer to take a drug test I thought it would be a urine test - but they gave me a swab test.

So it all depends on your officer. This was in New Jersey and now I live in Florida and I haven't gotten a drug test yet, so we will see what test they give down here.

Probation officers would give you a drug test where you would have to pee in a cup! That's mostly the main drug test they give!
