NyQuil will stay in your system for between four and twelve hours but there is a chance that you will still feel drowsy for anything up to 24 hours, so care must be taken if driving or operating machinery because there is a chance that concentration levels can be impeded.
• Over the counter
NyQuil is a medication intended to relieve many of the symptoms associated with the common cold and is available over the counter without a prescription.
• Sedative
There are a variety of NyQuil products and they all contain either sedating antihistamines, or hypnotics, as well as alcohol, so that the person suffering from a cold will be able to get some sleep without being disturbed by the unpleasant symptoms. This means that they are usually taken at night time, when drowsiness will not affect concentration levels.
• Daytime version
There is an alternative to NyQuil that can be taken in the day time and that is not intended to cause drowsiness. This is called DayQuil and does not contain the sedating antihistamines that are in NyQuil.
• Nyquil for children
Because of the alcohol content, traditional NyQuil is unsuitable for children to take, and so there is an alternative version. NyQuil Children's is the only product in the NyQuil range that does not have alcohol in it; the active ingredients are chlorpheniramine, which is an antihistamine, and dextromethorphan, which is a cough suppressant. NyQuil Children's is only available as syrup.
• Varieties of Nyquil
There is a variety of NyQuil products on the market, each designed for different aspects of treating the common cold. These include NyQuil Cold/Flu Multisymptom Relief, available as either a syrup or a LiquiCap; NyQuil D, which contains a decongestant, and is only available as a syrup; NyQuil Cough; NyQuil Sinus (LiquiCaps only); and NyQuil Children's.
