It's hard to know exactly, but usually hair testing is the best method to test if someone has been using drugs for a prolonged period of time.
Modern hair tests can detect traces of HTC (the active ingredient in marijuana) for up to three months after use.
Having said that, light users have been known to pass hair tests, because THC does not always successfully bind to the hair follicle.
Hair tests are certainly not the most accurate of tests that can be carried out.

- THC traces will show up in the hair about a week after consuming marijuana. This is because it takes time for the THC in the blood to get into the hair follicles.
- All drugs (not just marijuana) take a long time to naturally leave the hair follicles and this is why a hair test is used to look for drug use in a person over a prolonged period of time.
- There are hair products on the market which claim to be able to wash the traces of THC out of hair. However, there is little scientific research into how effective these products are.
